About BIFL: Smart Home

Why this site exists

Most product roundups optimize for whatever pays the highest commission this month. This site optimizes for the opposite: gear you buy once and stop thinking about. Every listing here is chosen for durability, repairability, and independence from services that can be shut down — the qualities the buy-it-for-life community actually cares about.

Buy-it-for-life smart home gear: durable, repairable devices with local control, open APIs, and proven longevity. Buy it once.

How listings are chosen

Each product is evaluated against a fixed set of deal-breaker criteria — things like local control, open APIs, and cloud dependency — plus warranty terms, known failure modes, and how long the maker has supported past products. The full criteria are documented on the methodology page. Products that fail a deal-breaker are listed with that failure shown, not hidden.

How this site makes money

Some product links are affiliate links: if you buy through them, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That's the whole business model — no sponsored placements, no paid reviews, and no manufacturer can pay to appear here or to remove a deal-breaker flag. Recommendations are written first; links are added after.

Corrections

If a product listed here has started failing early, dropped support, or moved features behind a subscription, that's exactly the information this site exists to surface — email hello@buyitforlifesmarthome.com and the listing will be re-reviewed.
